Wrestling weight certification calculator
Two floors, and your minimum wrestling weight is the higher one: what your body composition allows, and how fast the 1.5%-a-week descent rule lets you get there.
The two floors
LAW1 — body composition. Your fat-free weight divided by one minus the programme's body-fat floor. The NCAA computes it at 5% body fat for men and 17% for women (its packet divides by 0.95 and 0.83). High-school programmes under NFHS rule 1-5-1 use 7% for boys and 19% for girls from the 2026-27 season — the girls' figure was 12% through 2025-26.
LAW2 — the descent rate. From your assessment, you may not come down faster than 1.5% of body weight a week. The NCAA formula is BW − (0.015 / 7) × days × BW.
Your minimum wrestling weight is the higher of the two. Early in the season the calendar usually binds; later, body composition does. That is the design: a good body-fat test cannot buy a fast descent, and a long season cannot buy a weight below your compositional floor.
A worked example straight from the NCAA packet: a 200 lb wrestler measured at 12% body fat carries 176 lb of fat-free mass; 176 ÷ 0.95 gives a LAW1 of about 185 lb.
Before any of that: hydration
The body-fat test only runs if you pass the hydration test first — urine specific gravity no higher than 1.025 for high school, 1.020 for the NCAA. Fail it and there is no assessment that day. The full history and sources are in wrestling weight certification explained.
Your state association's system (for most, the NWCA Optimal Performance Calculator) issues the only number that counts. Use this page to plan around it, not to replace it.
Questions fighters ask
What is the minimum body fat for high school wrestling?
Under NFHS rule 1-5-1, 7% for boys and 19% for girls from the 2026-27 season. The girls’ floor was 12% through the 2025-26 season. Your state association implements the rule.
What is the minimum body fat for NCAA wrestling?
The NCAA computes lowest allowable weight at 5% body fat for men and 17% for women. The often-quoted 7% is the high-school figure.
How fast can a wrestler lose weight after certification?
No faster than 1.5% of body weight a week from the assessment. That descent rate produces the second floor, LAW2, and your minimum is the higher of LAW1 and LAW2.
What is LAW1 and LAW2?
LAW1 is the lowest allowable weight from body composition. LAW2 is the lowest allowable weight from the 1.5%-a-week descent rule. The minimum wrestling weight is whichever is higher on a given date.
What urine specific gravity do I need to pass?
No higher than 1.025 under NFHS rules for high school, and no higher than 1.020 for the NCAA. Failing means no body-fat assessment that day.
Is this calculator official?
No. It applies the published formulas to your inputs. The number your state association or the NCAA issues is the one that governs.
